Price I Pay
Here’s the idea: a guy takes the nine volt batteries out of his smoke detectors to power his guitar pedals and effects. His house burns down. The fire would’ve probably been prevented, had the smoke detectors had batteries in them. But our humble hero does not have a concern over losing his abode, as soon he thinks he’ll be a huge rock star and will be able to buy many many fancy houses to replace his current home.
Listen here:
Lyrics
Price I Pay
Need juice for my pedals and effects.
Took the 9 volt from the smoke detects.
My house burnt down and I couldn’t care less.
’cause soon I’ll be a rock star like T-Rex.My house burnt down,
and that’s okay.
I guess that’s the price I pay.
’cause I am going to be a rock star,
Someday.
Technical Details
Written: March 2003
Instruments: Electric guitars w/ heavy flange effects, acoustic guitar and piano (gratuitously played by Mary)
Loops: Unknown royalty-free drum loop obtained from Music Tech magazine
Other notes: Clearly the pompuous ending is a nod to the ending on something like Layla, and the final bang on the piano is obviously a nod to A Day in the Life.

Hey, Rob, I don’t like the pictures.

You’re funny, Jim, signing with ~V. What’s wrong with the pictures? … they tell the story of “Price I Pay”
That’s a lot of pedals
They’re not mine, just a photo from the web … all I’ve got is some crappy “all-in-one” effects thingy. Oh yeah, and this is a made up story … my house is still intact.
