How Does “Business” Get Ever Done?
It is amazing that anything gets done in the business world. If you’ve ever been in an office environment, unless you were in some strange utopian company, you know about the insane amount of bureaucracy and politics that exist. It is amazing that the red tape doesn’t prevent employees from excusing themselves for semi-regular bowel movements. It is amazing that the trash gets taken out. And don’t even get me started about the general ineptitude of the average office worker.
It often takes a million meetings to make the simplest decisions. UPS used to have a tag line about working “at the speed of business”. What a joke! To me “the speed of business” is the same as saying “I hope you brought your patience”.
Honestly, my company is not that bad; my company is medium-ish size and it could be worse. But it is SO hard to get anything meaningful, let alone innovative, done without stumbling upon crazy, non-practical road blocks. I have no idea how a huge organization such as IBM, HP, Microsoft or GE ever come out with new and innovative products. I guess that in most cases, these companies do not come up with good new ideas and products. Small upstarts come up with the good stuff and then they get bought by the big guys.
I can’t even imagine working in government!
